President Mahama Secures Major Diplomatic and Economic Wins in China
President John Dramani Mahama’s recent state visit to China has yielded significant economic and diplomatic outcomes, reinforcing Ghana’s growing partnership with the Asian powerhouse. His engagements with President Xi Jinping and other top Chinese officials have set the stage for transformative projects, green growth initiatives, and enhanced bilateral trade.
During a high-level bilateral meeting between President Mahama and President Xi, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deeper cooperation on sustainable environmental practices, green transitions, and the fight against illegal mining — a move expected to support Ghana’s ongoing environmental reforms.
A major highlight of the visit was China’s pledge to support new infrastructural projects in Ghana, including modern railway systems, a second gas processing plant, and President Mahama’s visionary “Big Push” and 24-hour economy agenda. China will also play a role in Ghana’s new “Green City Initiative,” positioning the country as a regional hub for eco-friendly development.
In a strong vote of confidence, President Mahama secured a fresh 200 million RMB grant from the Chinese government to support developmental projects of his administration’s choosing. This comes in addition to an earlier 200 million RMB grant already earmarked for the construction of a new modern market in Aflao, bringing the total Chinese grant support this year to 400 million RMB.
Another milestone achievement was the agreement to finalize a 0% tariff trade deal between Ghana and China by October 28, 2025. Once completed, Ghana will become only the second African nation to enjoy such preferential access to the Chinese market, a move that could dramatically boost exports and bilateral trade, which already exceeded US$11.8 billion in 2024.
As the African Union Champion for Gender and African Financial Institutions, President Mahama also made a powerful appeal for African women entrepreneurs to benefit from President Xi’s US$100 million women’s empowerment package and the Capacity Building Programme for 50,000 women across the continent.
In a further show of China’s investment confidence, plans have been unveiled for the establishment of a US$150 million glass float factory in Ghana’s Western Region — the first of its kind in the country. This project is expected to create jobs, promote local manufacturing, and enhance Ghana’s industrial base.
President Mahama’s visit underscores his commitment to impactful diplomacy, focused not just on symbolic engagements but on tangible partnerships that deliver measurable results for the Ghanaian people .
