President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady, Mrs. Lordina Dramani Mahama, have arrived in Beijing, China, to participate in a high-level Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women.

The two-day meeting, scheduled for October 13 and 14, is jointly hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping and UN Women. It will bring together heads of state, government representatives, and global leaders to “renew the spirit of the Beijing Declaration and accelerate its implementation,” in pursuit of gender equality and the empowerment of women worldwide.

The Beijing Declaration, adopted 30 years ago, remains one of the most progressive blueprints for advancing women’s rights and ensuring equal opportunities for all. The Global Leaders’ Meeting aims to reaffirm this commitment and assess the progress made by member states in integrating gender equality into national policies and development agendas.

President Mahama’s participation underscores Ghana’s continuous dedication to promoting women’s empowerment and social inclusion as key components of sustainable national development. Over the years, Ghana has made strides in improving access to education for girls, increasing women’s participation in leadership, and strengthening legal frameworks to protect women’s rights.

The First Lady, Mrs. Lordina Mahama, who has been an active advocate for women and children’s welfare through the Lordina Foundation, is expected to engage in discussions focusing on health, education, and economic empowerment for women and girls in Africa.

The summit will also explore ways to deepen international cooperation and mobilize resources to support initiatives that advance gender equality.

President Mahama’s attendance further emphasizes Ghana’s alignment with global efforts to create inclusive societies where women and men have equal rights, opportunities, and representation in all spheres of life.

The meeting in Beijing marks a significant platform for world leaders to reaffirm their commitment to the ideals of the Beijing Declaration — ensuring that progress toward gender equality remains a global priority
